finches

i havent been able to do much work on their new aviary,but will get it done before summer ends .i hope .is suppose to rain again all week so wont do much this week.the wild finches are nesting now.mine should be hatching out soon.will report later.going to nap now.

well they are still doing good on front porch.they are not sure about the thunder and lightening ,but will have to get use to it.its been raining for 3 days and no end in sight till about tuesday.

hello, i am sorry i didnt add any more last night but but i wasnt home all day.
so here is a little of the info i picked up yesterday.zebra finches can be used to foster other species.the closely related the more likely survival.example ,owl finch hatchlings are simular in appearance to zebra finches.the only way to distinguish the 2 are with mouth markings.need to go more later.

plants

there a lot of house hold plants that are safe for your birds. and a lot of plants that are toxic to zebra finches. if not sure about a plant don't use it,always use caution in choosing plants get a list . there are a lot of excellent sources on the web for lists of plants that you can and cannot use for your birds. i found that african violets are one that you can use.and i love those.there are a lot of ferns also.check them out first.better safe then sorry.

i didnt realize that finches come in second to canaries as gage bird pets. they will nest in just about anything. if they get in it they will nest in it.i use wooden net box with half open in front for them.some ppl prefer external nest boxes.i place pine straw,grass. i place some saw dust in bottom.
you need to empty out nest and babies have left nest
or they will reuse and could lead to deseases. they like cocoa fiber .if given enough materials they build up to the opening.they like to look out while incubating eggs.will write more on this tomorrow.

i finally got my screen door put up on my front porch. as my finches are on the front porch.it was nessasary to screen it in and do the screen door.it keeps the cats away from the birds.it will be nice to set out there now and listen to the finches and enjoy with out insects.

i am worried about my finches.i have 15 now and i know i have at least 4 females sitting. i am worried because i am building a new bigger aviary but not sure i will have it done in time.they sure can multiply fast. i love listening to them sing. i found out that need more then just seeds.they like veggies and fruits.i chop them up in my food chopper for them .they especially like broccoli,cauliflower and carrots.if u mix a blend of that with boiled eggs that is good for them to feed to the babies.
